英国私校威斯敏斯特公学宣布将于2028年前在中国开办6所分校，所分校将于2020年落户四川成都。《环球时报》记者在伦敦对威斯敏斯特公学校长派翠克•德汉姆先生（Patrick Derham）进行了专访，详细探讨了威斯敏斯特公学的“中国计划”。

The leading British private school, Westminster School, has announced plans to open six schools in China by the year 2028. The first one will be open in Chengdu in 2020. The Global Times reporter has a special interview in London, with the Head of Westminster School, Patrick Derham, on their "China Plan".

Introduction to Head of Westminster School

派翠克•德汉姆先生自2014年9月起一直担任威斯敏斯特公学的校长。在剑桥大学学习历史后，他在Cheam和Radley任教，1996年9月成为Solihull学校的校长，2001年9月成为橄榄球学院的校长。并于2018年6月，获得英国女王授予的大英帝国官佐勋章。

Patrick Derham has been Head of Westminster School since September 2014. After studying History at Cambridge he taught at Cheam and Radley before becoming Head of Solihull School in September 1996 and Rugby in September 2001. In June 2018, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen.

派翠克对拓宽入学渠道充满热情，他于2003年成立了阿诺德橄榄球学校基金会(Arnold Foundation for Rugby School)，该基金会为贫困儿童提供橄榄球寄宿教育，并在2012年11月以阿诺德基金会(Arnold Foundation)为基础，成立了春季寄宿班奖学基金（SpringBoard Bursary Foundation）。他也是IntoUniversity董事会的副主席和格莱斯顿图书馆的受托人。

Passionate about widening access Patrick set up the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School in 2003 which provides a boarding education at Rugby to under-privileged children and was instrumental in the setting up of the SpringBoard Bursary Foundation, a new national charity closely modelled on the Arnold Foundation, in November 2012. He is also Deputy Chairman of Trustees of IntoUniversity and a Trustee of the Gladstone Library.

派翠克与MichaelWorton 共同编撰了《解放学习》(2010)，与JohnTaylor(2013)共同编撰了《文化奥林匹克》，还编撰了《忠于异议》(2016)。

Patrick co-edited Liberating Learning Widening Participation with Michael Worton (2010) and Cultural Olympians with John Taylor (2013) and edited Loyal Dissent (2016).

记者：威斯敏斯特公学自诞生以来的900年间一直扎根英国，如何决定在中国建立分校？

Reporter: Westminster School has been established in the United Kingdom for over 900 years. Why did you decide to establish a campus in China?

校长：现在是全球化迅速发展的时代，我们和中国、印度、美国的学校已经有多年的，包括学生交换以及教师间的教学研讨，但在中国设立海外分校是威斯敏斯特公学建校以来的次。

Mr. Derham: this is a globalized world, and we have been having links with schools in China, India and US for many years, including student exchanges and discussions between teachers. However, this indeed is the first time we will be opening a school overseas.

我们选择在中国开设分校，是因为我们认同香港教育集团HKMETG的想法，希望能给予中国学生和英国威斯敏斯特公学学生同等优质的教育体验。同时，威斯敏斯特公学的管理者非常认同HKMETG的免费名额计划，我们打算在每个分校留出10%的名额，给出身贫困而学业优秀的孩子们提供免费就读机会。

We chose China because we share the same vision as HKMETG, that is, to give Chinese students the same high-quality education as the students in the British Westminster School. Meanwhile, Governors of Westminster School applaud the idea to set aside 10% of places as free places for children from families which would otherwise be unable to afford to benefit from the education on offer.

Reporter: Could you introduce the philosophy, model and advantages of Westminster School?

Mr. Derham: that's a key part of our collaboration with HKMETG. Westminster School has always been at the forefront of education research. The schools in China, will not only have a rigorous recruitment programme, but we shall be looking to develop teaching expertise through ongoing professional development for all teachers, principally in the schools in China, though some of this will happen in London —— especially for senior staff.

记者：分校与伦敦本校的异同在哪里？

Reporter: what are the differences between the schools in China and London Westminster School?

校长：我们将在小学和初中阶段按中国基础教育大纲设置课程。在中国基础教育大纲之外，我们有足够的时间来给学生们教授具有威斯敏斯特公学元素的课程，这部分将由外籍老师完成，以确保学生们在初中毕业前打好双语基础，并衔接上中英两种教学体制。

Mr. Derham: We will design our curriculum according to the Chinese standards at primary school and junior high. There will be time outside the Chinese National Curriculum for the students to have elements of a Westminster curriculum, which will be delivered by our foreign teachers.This ensures that the students can develop a bilingual approach, and can engage with both the Chinese and the British education system.

分校的高中阶段将和威斯敏斯特公学一致，教授A-Level课程。我们希望学生们高中毕业时具有巨大的双语优势，并有能力申请任何一所世界著名学府。

The high school will adopt the A level based curriculum of Westminster School. Our vision is that the students will have the enormous advantage of being able to operate with ease in both languages after graduation and to successfully apply to leading universities.

其实对我们而言，建立分校的真正挑战是如何在中国学生中促进讨论的氛围、建立他们独立学习的习惯。

For us, the real challenge is how to enable Chinese students to have critical thinking skills and to develop the capacity for independent learning.

记者：中国分校是寄宿学校还是走读学校？

Reporter: will the schools in China be boarding or day schools?

校长：威斯敏斯特公学的中国分校将招收1-18 岁的孩子，从幼儿园直至高中阶段。幼儿园及部分小学学生为走读，初高中是英式寄宿。英式寄宿和中国的寄宿制不同，我们将根据英式的寄宿模式来运营，学生的学习和生活以及各项活动将以校舍为单位展开，而不是集中住在一栋大的集体宿舍。学生们会被分到单人、双人和三人间，每个校舍有一名教师负责、数名住宿导师给予支持。

Mr. Derham: the schools in China will be recruiting students aged to 1-18, from kindergarten, to high school.Kindergarten and part of primary school students will have day school and the senior & junior high will be British boarding schools. Unlike the Chinese boarding schools, our boarding students will, live according to the British boarding school style, by organizing them into ‘Houses’ and not dormitories. Student swill be divided into rooms of one, two and three. Each of the Houses will be run by a teacher and supported by several tutors.

每个分校计划招收不少于2000名学生。幼儿园的规模小一点，高中阶段人数相对多一些。

It is planned that each school will have some 2000 students, with a smaller kindergarten and increased numbers in the senior high school.

记者：你们希望招收什么样的学生？

Reporter: what kind of students are you hoping to recruit?

校长：作为世界领先的私立学校，我们有着优异的学术传统和出色的课外活动，两者缺一不可。因此，我们看重学生的学术能力、求知欲和好奇心、以及对学习的强烈热情。

Mr. Derham: as the leading private school in the world, we have an excellent tradition as well as outstanding extra curricular provision: the two cannot be separated. Therefore, we value students’ academic capacity, eagerness to learn, as well as involvement in the range of opportunities on offer both in and outside the classroom.

By the time students graduate, they will have received a first rate all-round education. Academic achievement and engagement in sport, music and drama will be matched by resilience and the ability to collaborate. Students will be fluent in both English and Chinese, independent learners and have excellent research skills. Such qualities are valued highly at universities in US, UK,Canada, Australia, Etc.
